Set in the fictional town of Willamette, Colorado, the story follows freelance photojournalist Frank West, who enters a shopping mall under military quarantine to investigate a mysterious outbreak. The mall is overrun by zombies, and Frank has just 72 hours to uncover the truth before help arrives.
Powered by CAPCOM's RE ENGINE, the remaster features improved character models, environments, lighting, shadows, textures and visual effects. Zombie hordes fill the shopping mall, while more detailed facial expressions and environmental effects enhance the atmosphere. The updated presentation preserves the original game's dark humour, exaggerated action and distinctive survival experience.
Players explore the sprawling shopping mall, searching for weapons, useful supplies and survivors while managing their limited time. Almost anything can become a weapon, from guns and baseball bats to everyday household objects. Players can rescue survivors, investigate the outbreak, interact with other characters and face dangerous human opponents alongside the undead. Outfits found throughout the mall also allow Frank to change his appearance.
The remaster introduces several quality-of-life improvements, including auto-save functionality, an improved user interface, revamped controls and fully voiced character interactions. Players can move while aiming, use improved combat controls and take photographs during their investigation. These updates make exploration and combat more accessible while retaining the core gameplay of the original Dead Rising.
