Overview
A laptop, often known as a notebook computer or laptop computer, is a compact, lightweight personal computer (PC) including an alphanumeric keyboard and screen. Generally speaking, laptops are clamshell devices with the keyboard and screen located inside the bottom lid and the upper lid, while 2-in-1 computers with detachable keyboards are frequently sold as laptops or as having a laptop mode. Laptops are appropriate for mobile use since they can be folded up for storage or traveling. They get their name from the fact that they may essentially be used on a person’s lap. These days, laptops are utilized for many different purposes, including work, school, gaming, web browsing, personal multimedia, and ordinary home computer use.
As of 2022, the terms “notebook computer” and “laptop computer” are interchangeable in American English; nevertheless, in other dialects, one may be chosen. The phrases “notebook computers” and “notebooks” initially denoted a particular form of laptop, which was smaller and lighter than popular laptops at the time. However, over time, the names have become synonymous, and the term “notebook” no longer denotes a specific size. Laptops integrate an operating system, a processor (central processing unit, or CPU), memory, and several input/output components and features found in desktop computers, such as a display screen, small speakers, a keyboard, a data storage device, and pointing devices like a touchpad or pointing stick. The majority of contemporary laptops have built-in webcams and built-in microphones, while many also have touchscreens.
Laptops can be powered by an external power source such as an AC adapter or by an internal battery. Hardware specs vary greatly between types, models, and price ranges, including memory capacity and processing speed. Depending on the intended function, different models may also differ greatly in terms of structure, form factor, and design components. Rugged notebooks for use in construction or military applications are an example of specialized laptop models. Low-production cost laptops are also available, such as those from the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) organization, which include features like solar charging and semi-flexible components that are not found on most laptop computers. Originally thought to be a small niche market, portable computers—which eventually evolved into current laptops—were mostly used for specialized field applications. such as in the military, for accountants, or traveling sales representatives. As portable computers evolved into modern laptops, they became widely used for a variety of purposes.
